Origin of the Pineapple

It is believed that the pineapple plant originated near southern Brazil and Paraguay. It is uncertain as to the precise place of origin for the domesticated pineapple. The people of southern Brazil and Paraguay distributed the pineapple throughout South America. As time went by, the pineapple arrived in Central America and Mexico. The Mayas and Aztecs began cultivating the pineapple. When Columbus returned to Spain, he brought pineapple with him. The Spanish are given credit for introducing the pineapple to the Philippines and Hawaii. The first commercial pineapple plantation was started in the mid- 1800s. It is believed that the Dutch brought the pineapple to Europe. In the 1700s, pineapples were mainly used as decorations in upper-class homes. John Kidwell and James Dole are given credit for getting the pineapple industry started in Hawaii.

Growing Pineapples

Pineapples have a shallow root system. They are grown in sandy soil in warm climates. They are a drought tolerant plant. Pineapples must be grown in well-drained areas because they can’t tolerate overly wet soil. Pineapples are propagated by new vegetative growth such as slips, suckers and crowns. After a pineapple is removed from the center of the original plant it produces what is called a “sucker” and that is how the growth process is continued. The lifespan of a pineapple plant is approximately fifty years. The same propagation method occurs throughout the lifetime of the plant. It takes about 20 months for a plant to produce a single pineapple. One fruit is all that a parent plant produces.
